VISUAL ARTIST

I was 6 when I received my first art kit. 13 when I realized I liked to paint. 19 when I found oil paints. 23 when I found my art style.

ARTIST BIO

My name is Alessandria Shines, but I prefer Alekx. No the K is not a mistake. I have no children but I do have an 8 year old dog named Shaolin.

I am a 30 year old, black female American works in live theatre as a Properties Assistant. If I'm not reading, making earrings, playing video games, or doing carpentry projects I am probably outside.

My goals in life are to dress like I live in a manga so my hair color is ever changing; and to live by my own schedule doing what I love. Which is art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I believe my art is who I am in that moment: what is my latest obsession, how do I feel, what do I want to see. Sometimes there is no plan; I will roll out of my bed in the middle of the night and let the painting make itself. Most days I will start with a drawing of a simple subject and then it will just, evolve. But when I finish a piece the canvas usually has 3 things; movement, blood, and color.

I like to call my works RAINBOW GOTH. Each piece is done in layers because I paint until I feel like it is complete. So some art I can finish in one day or some can take years. Though I am never out of art projects; because I create two to three at a time.

I love to thrift or scrap my canvases; something about turning trash into images puts so much more depth and texture into an art piece. Plywood is one of my favorite bases since it always give a rough natural feel. Though my mediums spans across resin, clothes, wood, doors, and mannequins.

To produce my layered effect most of my pieces are mixed media, ranging in oil paints, gouache, acrylic, ink, and paper.

I want my pieces to be one of a kind and to call to someone who synchronizes with the energy I put into each piece. All of my pieces have a story behind them, even if I may not know what it is until they are finished. I guess you can call them abstract.

community engagement

ART AINT INNOCENT Group sponsored a city wide window painting during the George Floyd Protests.

FUN FACT: I originally was not part of the group. I went downtown to pass out water and snacks during the George Floyd protests. Only to find out no marching was happening that day. I saw people painting on windows, realized I had paint in my car, and joined. The event coordinators later took my info and I joined the protest through art.

CRAFTS

When I am not painting I am crafting. It can range from earrings, to iron patches, statues, or even clothes.

It’s all in the imagination and mine is brightly colored but twisted.
